The
native people and culture of the Gambia:
What
really makes Gambia a different and special country is its diversity. It is a
melting pot of many ethnic groups and races. Each of these groups has its own
subculture such as dance, clothing and also body movement. Most people speak
more than two languages, which help them communicate easily with foreign
people. Historically, the Mandinkas were the first native people who settled in
Gambia. They migrated from the Niger River Senegambia region. In the 15th
century the Mandinka were able to control and dominate Gambia. Traditional
Gambian dishes cooked in homes are mostly rice, the staple food, with a
covering of various spicy sauces as on the right. Attached are some pictures
